Offline Retail Failure or Online Business Success?

Article by Marjorie Pascal-Pretre

Did you know that more than 40 percent of Australian consumers do their shopping online? E-commerce has exploded around the world, giving consumers more choice than ever before. Online shopping also grants global businesses to establish stronger market presence right here in Australia without ever building a storefront on our soil.

In a current survey conducted by Colmar Brunton, more than 50% of respondents stated they had purchased items from overseas using online shopping, rather than buying from a retail store here at home. This question brought a round of comments from those respondents that signified a sense of frustration with how far behind the rest of the world our local retailers are.

The same survey reported that more than 90% of consumers fully anticipate retail stores to have online sales, offers and purchasing options.

Yet, when cross-questioned, the same respondents didn’t always focus on price-competitiveness. A big portion prefabricated it very clear that the primary reason they selected to shop online was convenience. The remaining responses indicated that broader product and company choices were their main reason for shopping online.

Spectacular Offline Failures

Despite the staggering rise in the number of online book income over the past decade, two of Australia’s largest national bookstore chains selected to believe that online shopping wouldn’t affect them.

Both Angus & Robertson and Borders Australia collapsed in spectacular style as a result of imperfectness to see the benefits of offering customers an online outlet alongside their regular bricks-and-mortar trading.

By comparison, internationally-recognised clothing brand, Billabong, experienced a big leap in profits by embracing a fully-functional website offering customers a way to buy online. It’s reported that Billabong has experienced between 80% and 120% growth in business in September 2011, compared to the same month last year. How? They simply prefabricated the decision to incorporate an online presence with their established offline storefronts.

The Reality of Online Business

In 2010, online payment company, PayPal, released a forecast that online retail spending within Australia alone will reach .8 billion by 2012. Forrester Research took this research a step further to show that the online spending figure could rise to .7 billion by 2013.

PayPal’s Managing Director, Frek-Malte Feller, also released figures showing that Australian shoppers spent an average of ,223 in online shopping buys in the six-month period from Jan 2010 to July 2010 alone.

Feller is quoted as saying that Australian retailers are lagging behind the rest of the world when it comes to online shopping. He also noted that Australian online shoppers spend around 40% of their total online retail spending amounts with overseas competitors.

This highlights a shocking demand of Australian retail options in the online retail sector. It also leaves the doors wide open for more international competitors to entice Aussie shoppers away from local businesses.

The reality is … online business is here to stay. Consumers love the convenience and the choice, but if they’re unable to find the things they want online from local businesses, you can be guaranteed they’ll take their business to overseas competitors without batting an eyelid.

With 15 million Australian World wide web users browsing the online world to make their shopping choices, many local businesses could be losing more business than they thought simply by putting off the move to an online platform.

So, will your business be one of those left behind in the rapidly growing online business world?
